The challenge
DFDS needed to assess the feasibility of deploying EVs across its operation. That meant processing large volumes of historical telematics data from multiple systems, including Webfleet and MAN Data, to understand journeys, distances, dwell times and operating patterns.
They also needed to determine how to allocate EVs across depots — balancing operational suitability with available charging infrastructure and grid capacity — and ensure planners could operate EVs confidently on a day-to-day basis.
The approach
Dynamon used its ZERO platform to consolidate and analyse DFDS’s telematics data, mapping diesel operations and modelling EV feasibility by route and depot. Infrastructure and grid availability assessments were carried out at each site, informing how EVs were initially allocated across the network.
Following these assessments, operational feasibility was revisited to reflect real-world charging conditions. Some depots were limited to 43 kW three-phase AC chargers, shaping how vehicles could use top-up charging during the day and therefore how much driving could be completed within a shift. Other depots with higher grid capacity were equipped with higher-power charging, enabling longer daily utilisation and the ability to recharge vehicles between shifts.
This allowed DFDS to plan for higher utilisation, including operating vehicles across multiple shifts where charging turnaround times supported it.
Following deployment, DFDS adopted RouteZERO to support day-to-day planning of EV operations. Planners used the tool to model routes with consideration for payload, weather and charging, including on-the-go charging. As an early adopter, DFDS worked closely with Dynamon to refine the product to meet operational requirements.
The results
DFDS deployed EVs across its UK operation with a clear plan for where they would operate and how they would be supported, reflecting both operational requirements and site-specific charging conditions.
RouteZERO is now used as an operational planning tool within DFDS and is being rolled out more widely across the business, including into mainland Europe.
Planners are able to assess and run routes using EVs with confidence, including planning around charging strategies and opportunities to maximise utilisation through multi-shift operation.
